Fired Over Facebook

The Youtube video, "Mom Fired Over Facebook Status" discusses a woman who posted negative comments about a coworker on Facebook and it resulted in her getting fired from the job. My initial reaction to the story was partially sympathetic. I felt like it was very unnecessary for her to post such words about a coworker especially knowing that they could see it. But at the same time, I feel like the whole thing was blown out of proportion. I don't think she should have been fired but rather a stern talking to which will make her aware of the repercussions that this has on her and her coworker. The reason behind the employer firing the woman is because there is clear evidence of harassment in what she posted online. According to expert Derek Witte, a credited law professor, it is legal to fire someone for almost anything with the exception of race, gender or ethnicity, therefore what the employer did was completely legal. A digital footprint is essentially what is left online for people to see about a person. What the woman has done by posting this status of her coworker is defaming him and leaving a negative digital footprint in his name. Things that are posted on Facebook and Twitter are never private. There is always a way for people to see what you're posting no matter how secure you think it is. My advice to her would be to just not post it because you are never sure of who will see it and what will happen. Which will avoid problems like the one she got herself into.
